How to Tell Whether You are Gluten Intolerant

(1)  Check your symptoms.
Do you and/or your family- members have the following symptoms?
           low energy, chronic fatigue
           respiratory  problems
 cravings for bread, bagels, pastry, pasta, cookies, for sweets in general
 bloating (which can be confused with overweight and lead to purging or starving)
           gas, gastritis
 stomach aches, digestive pain, colic
 avoid eating (often without knowing it)
           never satisfied, always hungry
 prefer liquids over solid food
 abnormally low or high weight
           constipation
 diarrhea or irritable bowel syndrome (there may be undigested food in the stool)
           depression; manic-depression; suicidal depression
           colitis, colon cancer
           respiratory problems
           alcoholism
           eczema, dry skin
           allergies
 dependence on drugs to keep going: caffeine, Nutrasweet, pot, speed, tobacco
           arthritis, joint pain
           premature graying
 iron or B12 deficiency anemia
           lupus
           multiple sclerosis
 schizophrenia, dementia (higher incidence than usual)
           diabetes

(2) A biopsy of your small intestine is the most accurate way to diagnose Celiac Sprue. See a
gastroenterologist and be pushy.

(3) There is a new blood antibody test confirmed in European and UK medical studies to be 98%
accurate. Specialty Laboratories (1-800-121-7110) in Santa Monica, CA, is doing this test. It is even
available through Kaiser.

(4) Avoid all gluten for seven days. On the eighth day, do eat gluten for breakfast and lunch. If you are
not gluten intolerant, these will be two totally ordinary meals. If you are gluten intolerant, there will
usually be some sort of adverse response within the first day.

(5) However, many people with celiac disease do not get a visible response to resuming gluten after a
gluten-free period. Gluten intolerance may not work like true allergies in this regard. Celiac is an
auto-immune disease. There is also the problem of delayed reaction. Some people get arthritic
pains, muscular pains, etc., days afterwards, making it extremely difficult to associate the symptoms
to a food eaten two or three days before.
